Athena were a progressive metal band from Tuscany in Italy. They were formed in 1991, went through numerous line-up changes, released 3 albums during a stormy decade, and called it quits ca 2002. They are probably mostly known for their second album, featuring Fabio Lione (Rhapsody, Vision Divine) on vocals.

Athena peaked my interest due to the vocalist on this, the bands second, album. It was released when the European power metal scene was growing rapidly. And one of the leading bands in the Italian scene was Rhapsody. And this is where Athena went to find their second vocalist, namely Fabio Lione.
Athena plays melodic, progressive European power metal. The music is varied, and goes from speedy and aggressive to more melodic and soft from song to song, and sometimes even within a song. Many European bands from the same era relied heavily on a steady double bass drumming, and staccato guitar riffing. Athena stays away from most of these clichés. Instead I find that they lean more towards progressive tendencies, borrowed from bands like Dream Theater and latter day Fates Warning. That means vivid keyboards, time changes and even jazz influences. Still, I don't look upon 'A New Religion?' as being a very technical album. The vibe is more reflective and ambient. This is probably very intentional, as the lyrics deal with religion and philosophy. Heck, even the bands name refers to the goddess of civilization, wisdom, strength, strategy, craft, justice and skill in Greek mythology.
I've owned 'A New Religion?' since it was first released. And even though I can't really remember much from it in-between listening sessions, I always enjoy it when I do put it on. I've so far been unsuccessful in scoring any of the other 2 albums Athena released . But 'A New Religion?' is good enough for me to continue the quest.
