Naming their firstborn after a Mortification song is bound to get some attention in the Christian metal realm. And Becoming The Archetype managed just that. Hailed as one of the better new bands to come forth in this millennium, I was eager to hear what they had come up with. First of all, this band is not content just delivering you an average debut. Most of the songs are so complex, and you discover new stuff all the time, and every time, you listen to this album. In blending death metal, metalcore, progressive metal, and even a dose of plain heavy metal, they have come up with a sound that is their own. Take "Elegy", the longest track on the album, f.ex.; it contains every style mentioned above, and even adds some somber acoustic parts too. And the closing "The Trivial Paroxysm" includes a classic prog rock part! But the complexity of the material also makes it difficult to really grasp in it's entirety. It is almost too must to digest in one go. Maybe one or 2 less songs on the album would help? Still, when it works it really works though. Just check out mentioned "Elegy" and "The Epigone". Brutal and beautiful at the same time. It will be fun to check out what this band can come up with next.
