The year is 2008, the whole thrash revival is upon us, almost like a plague. One band sets out to do things a little differently. Albeit clichè-riddenly covered in art done by legendary Ed Repka, 'Breaking The Wheel' is still not your average "we're recreating 1985-era Kreator in 2008"-kind of album. First of all, it is evident that Warchild (main song writer and musician) is an accomplished player! Not that virtuosi is that needed when playing brutal thrash metal. But it is so much more fun to listen to an album where you discover new stuff upon every listen. And that is quite rare when it comes to retro-thrash!

Clearly inspired by the likes of Megadeth and Heathen, I am sure Warchild has lent an ear or two to speed metal bands like Agent Steel and Helstar also. All of these bands combine intricate playing and finesse with breathtaking speed and thrash. This is exactly what Eliminator offers, although sounding far removed from any of the aforementioned bands. They're just rooted in the same ballpark. Eliminator also adds another strong influence; namely early black metal. The result is raw, vicious and brutal, yet at the same time structured and well played. There is nothing truly groundbreaking here, but 'Breaking The Wheel' should still make enough headway to set the band apart in a crowded scene. It's a thrill to listen to this album, and every spin leaves me wanting to hear more. I can't say the same for 4/5 retro-thrash CD's coming out these days. So if you like fast, well-played, "dangerous" thrash metal, than do yourself a favor and check out 'Breaking The Wheel'.
