There is no stopping the new wave of thrash metal, it seems. And Fatality is yet another contribution to this thriving scene. Northern Ireland might not be the place most of us think of when we hear the term thrash metal, but these guys might just as well make you think again. Their goal is to let everyone know that metal is not dead, and they are here to bring back the days of old school metal! And what a retro-kick this album is! 'Metal As Hell: Chapter I' sounds as though it was recording during the first half of the 80's. At first I thought that the production was lacking. But soon I understood that this was just the sound these guys were aiming for. If you grew up with demo tapes from bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Death Angel and Exodus, then you know what you are in for with this CD. It's not only the sound that takes you back a few decades, but the lyrical approach does the same. Songs about drinking, fighting and the metal life in general is brought to you with a healthy dose of humor. The band is rowdy, but still pretty tight. Especially the guitar work is worth mentioning. At times the guitars lead you to think that Fatality is a much more technical band than they are, delivering some blistering leads, and other mind boggling virtuous string bending. But this is still a full-on dirty, fast, furious and gritty thrash metal band with a punk attitude. The vocals are of the street-like thrash metal variety. Tom is not shouting or screaming, but rather spitting out the words in a fast and ferocious manner. But what they deliver in sound and lyrics, they sure don't follow up image wise. 'Metal As Hell' is a good contribution to the growing thrash metal revival, albeit a little generic at times (like no one can hear where they stole the opening riff for "Shock Treatment" from!). But it will be fun to see what the band can come up with next. Thanks to Kieran for hookin' me up with this CD.
