Goliath is the brainchild of Mick Rowe (ex-Tempest, Midnight Orchestra). They are from Terre Haute, Indiana, and play something they call doomonic metal. It fuses old school psychedelic rock with modern doom/sludge metal. Think of it as one big sonic street brawl between The Doors, Trouble, and Motörhead. Now you get the picture. Deep, clean vocals mix with gravelly, rumbled groans. This is then threaded into massive, doomy guitar riffs and obliterating rhythm assaults. It's slow, low, and powerful. Mick has also formed a new band called Mindset 7.

I didn't know what to expect from this band. I had not heard anything about them, except that they were a Christian metal band. Turns out that Mick Rowe was the main force of this band. I like the old Tempest records, so this was a nice surprise. He has clearly changed his musical style, and I was not sure what to call it at first. Then I read the bio that came with this promo CD, and there Goliath were labeled as stoner rock. This is a style of music that I do not like very much, but Goliath became the exception to the rule. Their music is not great, it's just plain old fun. When I do not know what else to put in the silver disc-spinner, I put this CD on, and enjoy the groove! It has this vibe that just makes me happy. Mick states that he is trying to explore both his dark, and his lighter sides. But I only find good feelings here. I can't really figure out why he has to say stuff like: "All horror films inspire me and I also dig the Bible. A lot of the stories in there could be horror films..." and "...enter a place there is romance in death, beauty in darkness, and wisdom is found when you scratch the surface." This, to me, sounds just stupid! It's a good think that the music holds up.
Rock trivia: The press-release sheet states that 'The Gate' will be released on September 11, 2001. I guess they changed that date!
