Letter 7 started out as the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist, JD Evans. 'Salt Of The Earth' was the debut album. Here JD played just about every note and every instrument himself. He also brought along one Tom Collete, who did most of the vocal work. Together they delivered an album that just as well could have been released 20 years earlier! This is some seriously 80's influence heavy metal, with lots of hooks and melody. The key ingredient is the memorable choruses. And there should be no secret that Mr. Evans is as talented as a songwriter as he is on his instruments. The guitar is his main instrument. But he sure handles everything else with the greatest ease and matter of course. In many cases where 1 man is handling most of the instruments himself, the result is an album without a band feeling. And don't get me started on the dreaded drum machines! That is not the case with 'Salt Of The Earth'. I actually had to read the booklet before I found out that this was mostly a 1 man effort. The songs stuck like glue already on the first listen. That's how catchy the music from Letter 7 is. It reminds me of great bands such as Dokken, Eden, Whitecross and Saint, to name a few. So basically this is melodic metal from the 80's, played with conviction in 2007. And speaking of conviction, this band is not afraid to stand for what they believe in. All of the lyrics tells about their bold faith in God, and even though the Truth they speak of is timeless, there aren't many bands around these days that still pride on being an evangelical metal band! Kudos for that, and for delivering a VERY solid first release, that left me hungry for more!
