Some bands just never get the recognition they may have deserved. When I first heard Mayadome, I found them to be in this category. They were signed to Shrapnel Records, a division of Roadrunner. Yet there is virtually no info about them anywhere on the net. Mayadome were from Uppsala in Sweden. Their debut album, called 'Paranormal Activity', was released in 1996. They are a perfect example of a Dream Theater inspired band that doesn't really sound like Dream Theater. Yes, this is prog metal, with as much emphasis on the prog part as the metal part. None of the songs clock in at under 5 minutes, so we get a lot of music with 10 tracks. The music evolves around signature time changes, keyboard laden soloing and other progressive "tricks". They also add unusual elements, such as eastern inspired instruments (I suspect they are all played on keyboard though), and female vocals. 'Paranormal Activity' is a very uneven debut. Some of the songs leave a satisfying impression, while others are easily forgotten. But the weakest link here is the vocals. Björn Holmquist can sing decent enough, but he has a very limited vice, and he cannot pull off the various changes that this kind of music requires. And he is totally missing any kind of vibrato, leaving the longer notes sounding flat. Thus this album is mostly listenable for the instrumental craftsmanship. And as such, Mayadome were a band that showed some promise. They eventually recorded a second album in 1999, with a different singer, before disbanding.
