Oil started out in Southern California in 1997. They were a thrash metal/power metal band, mixed with some groove-metal elements. Although the band described themselves as a cross between a freight train and Frank Sinatra(!!), try to imagine a blend of Dark Angel and Machine Head, then add tons of groove. As of 2005 the band is split up.

Oil's debut EP is hailed by many of their fans as their best work. This is thrash laden groove metal, with lots of punch and power. Ron Rhinehart (ex-Dark Angel) vocals are very upfront both in the mix, and in lyrical content! His newfound faith in Christ is what drives him, and this band. As said, the music is as heavy as a freight train. But the band also mix it up with some "softer" parts, such as in the beautiful "Last Breath". This worship like song creates some much needed dynamic. 'Oil' is a cool debut from a promising band.

'Refine' is Oil's first full-length album, after already having released an acclaimed EP. The EP is supposedly even more thrash influenced than this. This time Oil's music takes you into a place of power, thrash and groove, and I feel like staying. Ron sings better than ever, but all the time sounding familiar. I can't help thinking that this sounds a bit like Machine Head on their 'Burn My Eyes' album, but to me this is not a negative thing. But make no mistake about it, Oil's lyrics are nowhere near Machine Head or Dark Angel. These guys are born again Christians, and the lyrics are bold testimonies of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Killer tracks: Divided, Open Wound, Chopping Block
