Pyn Siren can either mean a device producing a loud, often wailing sound, as a signal or warning. It also means harsh and rough in manner, unpleasant, abrasive personality disorder when used on the senses. In both cases it sounds rather intolerable! Luckily the band Pyn Siren is not.
Fronted by ex-Rage Of Angels vocalist, Dan Mariano, Pyn Siren is a band not of it's time. The bands only album, 'Slave To Your Master', was released in 2003, during a time when melodic metal was not exactly the flavor of the day. Here the band tries their best to mimic Skid Row during their 'Slave To The Grind' era (heck, even the album titles are similar!). I can't blame anyone dismissing Pyn Siren as nothing but a copycat band. Luckily this has never bothered me. As long as I like what I hear, I don't mind bands trying to sound like their heroes. Now, Pyn Siren are never close to recreating the magic Sebastian Bach and band created on their first 2 albums, but they do have a set of strong songs, and dare I say that 'Slave To Your Master' sounds better than any of the post-Seb-era Skid Row albums?. Danny has a very powerful voice, and with a little help from some friends, the rest of the band delivers some tasty instrumental work to boot. Songs like "Cry Me A River" and "H.L.J. (Hung Like Jesus)" will rock your socks off! This is sleazy, booze 'n' beer-soaked party music.
There are a couple of downsides here though. The lyrics are at best hard to figure out, and at worst very immature. I'm not one to be throwing stones, but belching out the F-word in just about every song is just lame. Is this really the same guy that sang for the Christian band, Rage Of Angels? No wonder the controversy surrounding that band! My other complaint is the mastering of this album. While I can still hear what is going on with all of the instruments here, the overall sound is still very muddy. It's like listening to a CD played through speakers covered in blankets!
Still, if you miss the music on the first 2 Skid Row albums, or even Rage Of Angels, then Pyn Siren might be able to quench your thirst for a while. "Lil' By Lil'" is listed as a bonus track. But I am 100% sure that no versions exists without this track.
Killer tracks: Cry Me A River, H.L.J., Higher, Slave To Your Master, Lil' By Lil'
