Tad Morose were originally formed in 1991 by Christer "Krunt" Andersson, Per-Ola "Rossi" Olsson and Dan-Erik "Danne" Eriksson, in their hometown of Bollnäs, Sweden. Shortly thereafter Anders "Wispen" Westlund joined.  It didn't take long before they got signed to a record label, but then they already had changed their singer. Although changing members and labels numerous times since then, the band is still around. They might be one of the most underrated bands in metal history.

I bought this CD thinking it was yet another compilation album from Tad Morose, given the title and everything. But that was of course wrong. 'Leaving The Past Behind' is the bands debut album, released on Black Mark in 1993. This is the sound of a young band, and it bears the mark of being a debut. Nevertheless, the songwriting is great, and despite some shortcomings, such as a heavy accent and a weak production, this is a good album. Tad Morose's music lies somewhere in between traditional melodic heavy metal, prog/metal and power metal. You can also describe them as a mix between Europe and the US. The clean vocals gives them a slightly more hard rock feel than the music probably deserves. A tougher powerhouse singer would have fit in more nicely with the dark, broody music. But as a debut album I think 'Leaving The Past Behind' is working just fine. One also has to remember that back in 1993 heavy metal wasn't exactly the flavor of the day. And one has to give props to a young band starting out in the midst of the grunge craze. Also worth noticing is the nice artwork, done by the now famous Kristian Wåhlin. He has also worked with bands such as Hollow, At The Gates and Dissection, to name a few.

Killer songs: Miracle, Voices Are Calling, Leaving The Past Behind, Way Of History

Tad Morose are one band that keeps getting good reviews, but never seem to get a real break-through. I've owned a couple of other releases by them before, but never got into the band then. This compilation album however, is killer! What really made me curious about it was the fact that it contains a cover of Savatage's "Power Of The Night". And older Savatage might not be a far fetched comparison to Tad Morose's own music. I might even invest in their other material again, and see if I like it better now. My CD is a Russian edition.
