Whiplash was an American thrash metal band. The band was founded in 1984 in Passaic, New Jersey by the three Tony's: Tony Portaro (vocals, guitar), Tony Scaglione (drums) and Tony Bono (bass). They appeared on the 'Speed Metal Hell' compilation from New Renaissance Records in 1985 with the track "Thrash Till Death", after which they signed with Roadrunner Records.  Joe Cangelosi replaced Tony Scaglione in 1986 when he left for a small stint with Slayer. Joe Cangelosi recorded 'Ticket To Mayhem' in 1987 with the two Tony's. In 1989 Glenn Hanson joined the band as the new singer along with Joe from the previous album. They were part of perhaps the best known Whiplash album, entitled 'Insult to Injury'. The band split up, but reunited in 1996 for two more albums, before the three Tony's recorded a final album together in 1998. Bassist Tony Bono died in 2002 after suffering a heart attack, at the age of 38.

Thrash metal frenzy!! That pretty much sums up this album! Whiplash are one of hundred of thrash metal bands from the late 80's/early 90's that never made an impact on the big scene then, but have a quite a cult following today. It seems many of these bands are getting the recognition they deserve today, over 15 years later. 'Insult To Injury' is an album that combines both Bay Area thrash and German thrash metal. It belongs in the best-thrash-metal-album-you've-never-heard category. From the pummeling riffs, courtesy of Tony Portaro, to the soothing, yet tough, voice of new vocalist, Glenn Hansen, and the steady, but never dull, rhythm-section, the entire album is one killer collection of thrash metal masterpieces. All of the songs include signature thrash metal riffing, but at the same time are varied enough to let some mid paced, almost power metal like, stuff get entangled within the speed. Some times they remind me of early Metal Church, and that can only be a good thing in my book. You will not regret checking out the awesomeness of the thrash/speed/power metal monster that is Whiplash. Any metalhead not loving songs like "Hiroshima" and "Battlescars" is a weird thought for me.

Killer tracks: Hiroshima, Insult To Injury, Essence Of Evil, Witness To The Terror, Battlescars
